How to Compare Cat Food Ingredients
- Domestic cats are natural carnivores, meaning they need a diet that is composed primarily of meat. Study the ingredients of a cat food brand, and if animal protein is not the first ingredient, put it back. Your cat needs to eat food high in protein and fat such as beef, chicken or lamb. Remember that "fish flavored" does not mean there is much fish in the food.

If two types of cat food have similar ingredients, splurge for the name brand cat foods because name brands use superior ingredients in their formulas. It may be more expensive, but habitually feeding an animal low-grade food that is lacking nutrition will cost the cat's health in the long run. Avoid foods containing large amounts of filler byproducts such as corn or soy. - It does not matter if you choose to feed your cat dry or wet cat food. Once you find a high-quality food, slowly introduce it into the cat's diet while weaning it from the previous food. Make sure your cat always has access to clean water as well.
