How to Draw Profiles Looking Up and to the Left

    • 1). Take a reference photo of the person. Make sure that the subject is looking up and to the left when you take the photo.

    • 2). Develop the photos. Make copies of the picture that measure at least 8 inches by 10 inches or greater. This allows you to see the lines making up this pose better.

    • 3). Use a marker with a sharp point to draw a grid on the photo. Draw the lines so that the resulting squares equal 1 inch by 1 inch.

    • 4). Draw a grid on the drawing paper of equal size. Use light pencil marks to make the grid lines.

    • 5). Look for the grid square that houses the person's eye. Find out the position of that square. For example, you've discovered that the square is located three squares from the top of the photo and six squares from the side.

    • 6). Find the same grid square on the drawing paper. Count the squares just like you did to locate the one on the photo.

    • 7). Study the lines that make up the eye in that grid square. Notice how they curve so that it appears the person is looking up and to the left. Study the angles. Observe how many lines go into creating the eye, such as the lines forming the eyelid, the iris and the eyelashes.

    • 8). Sketch the lines of the eye in your paper's grid square. Recreate the curves and angles of each line as they intersect within the grid square. Draw the lines as you see them. Be willing to erase lines and draw them again if you draw one incorrectly.

    • 9). Draw the rest of the person's profile using the grid. Concentrate on the areas around the eyes, the nose and the chin. These areas establish the position of the person's head. When you're done, you'll have a line drawing of the photo of the person looking up and to the left.

Erase the grid lines on your paper. Be careful not to erase the drawing of the person's profile.

Shade the profile picture using the hatching technique. Hatching requires you to draw a series of parallel lines close together. The closer you draw the lines, the darker the shaded area appears. To start, establish the areas on the drawing that have shading. Look at the reference photo to see these areas. Once you've mapped out the shaded areas, darken the spots that need it by drawing more lines closer together. Notice how the light and dark fall in the person's eye and chin areas - replicate these shadows on your drawing.
