Cool Cocktail Drinks
- Who is cooler than Bond, James Bond? The vodka martini--shaken, not stirred--is the most commonly referenced Bond potable but in reality, there's a more specific drink made famous by 007. In "Casino Royale," Bond spells out a recipe for a Vesper Martini. This mix--3 oz. of gin, 1 oz. of vodka and 1/2 oz. of Lillet Blanc wine---is the true James Bond Martini.
To make, pour the gin, vodka and wine into a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice. If you don't have any Lillet on hand, use dry vermouth. Cover, shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a twist of lemon. - Fictional characters have also set the cool standard for the ladies with Sex and the City's Cosmopolitan. Carrie Bradshaw and the girls made this fruit-tini popular and it now appears on martini menus everywhere.
The cosmo is easy enough to make and is served in a chilled martini glass. To try out this classic, pour 1 ¼ oz. vodka, 1 oz. cranberry juice and ¼ oz. triple sec into a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice. Cover, shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Just like in Bond's famous cocktail, garnish with a twist of lemon. - Nothing says cool like busting out the bubbly. Pop the cork and serve champagne straight up, chilled or with a number of optional mix-ins. Add orange juice for a mimosa or crème de cassis (black currant liqueur) for the French classic kir royale. Fruit purees of raspberries and mangoes also add a fun flair to classically cool champagne.
- The daiquiri is a cool---or more accurately, cold---cocktail that brings an island flair to any event. The original is made simply with 2 oz. of light rum, 1 oz. plus 1 tsp. of fresh lime juice and 1/2 oz. simple syrup stirred over ice. But this drink doesn't stop there. The add-ins and serving styles are almost endless for this tropical treat. Blend with strawberries, peaches or mangoes and serve frozen for a cooling burst of flavor and color. Garnish with pineapple, kiwi and an umbrella in a fancy glass. Any way you serve it, this sip of rum-fun is always cool.
