Interior Room Design in Different Colors
- Complementary colors are found directly across from one another on the color wheel. Red and green are often the prime example, with light orange and medium blue, and purple and yellow being others. Complementary colors are used to express bold ideas with dramatic statements. A home interior decorated with contrasting paint will draw notice and conversation but it will also look busy and complicated.
- Interior design colors often match the building style of the home. A Mediterranean style home would look good with a blue and orange color scheme. A soft green and dark pink gives an Asian feeling as people walk through the room and is ideal for an Asian-themed home. Tan and clay red match a Southwestern adobe style home.
- Dark colors tend to close a room in while lighter colors give an impression of more space. Mixing two darker colors, such as maroon and dark gray, will give a room a more intimate feel, but for some it may seem too cramped. Earthy colors, such as reds, dark oranges, bluish-grays, greens -- all with brown overtones -- bring the outdoors inside. Pastel pinks, yellows, blues, greens and browns all create a sense of springtime in a room.
- With an unlimited number of colors to choose from, a contrasting scheme can have as much variation as a musical chord. As layer upon layer of chords build into a compelling musical piece, choosing layers of contrasting colors will do the same for your rooms. For example, instead of choosing the single contrasting color directly across from a color such as Desert Rose, pick the two colors on either side of the contrasting color to create a subtle difference from the contrast. The single color could be dominant with the two contrasting colors playing a harmonic role.
