Is it There Or Their?
Confusion can arise when trying to spell words in English.
You hear the word and then it has the same sound as another word.
To be able to spell it correctly you need to know the context of the word.
The context is often found by saying the word in a sentence.
This will tell you what the actual word is.
Then if you know the word you are able to spell it.
The words There and Their have very different meaning.
There means "that location.
" It is spelt like the word here, which means "this location.
" So when the word There is used you can think of it referring to a location.
So to learn There you can imagine a location, and see the letters and spell the word.
The word Their is a possessive pronoun.
In other words it always describes a noun.
The spelling of Their, came from the word they.
The Y in they has been converted into its i form, still following the normal English grammar, where the e comes before the i.
There are many other words such as this that cause confusion.
There is where and wear; fort and fought; hi and high, to name a few.
Learning to spell the words is easy as they are only a few letters in length.
Being able to spell them when someone gives it to you verbally, means that you need to understand either the context or the meaning before you can work out what is the correct spelling.

- When you learn a word that can have another word sounding like it, learn the meaning of the word.
- Listen to how the word is pronounced.
Some words sound similar but are different. - Get the context of the word so work out which meaning of the word fits.
- Find out the type of word, eg adverb, pronoun, etc.
This is getting into grammar and can complicate the matter.
If this is the case, then if you are using a computer with a grammar check, then type the word in the sentence and see whether the grammar check agrees with you.
