Book Club Meeting Ideas

104 17

    Initial Meeting

    • Establish guidelines at your first meeting so members know what to expect. Consider nominating a facilitator to run the meetings and maintain order. Decide how often the book club will meet and where. Think about rotating the gatherings so each member acts as host. Pick a genre to read and create a list of books so members know what to purchase or reserve at the library. Discuss the format of the book club, such as discussion, entertainment, presentations or questions. Think about refreshments and set general guidelines. Ask a member to record the decisions made and provide copies for all club members.

    Activities

    • Use a variety of activities to review the book during meetings. Make members feel as comfortable as possible and open to sharing. Email a list of discussion topics during the week. Pick topics such as "Which character did you enjoy the most and why?" and "What are some of the strengths and weaknesses of the book?" If there's a movie based on the book, watch the film and hold a discussion about it at the next meeting.

Create a trivia game to review the book. Play in teams to increase the comfort level. Facilitators prepare questions in advance and display the game board. As members select questions, mark off the categories and keep track of points. Start a discussion with an ice-breaker such as mentioning one thing you liked and one thing you didn't like about the book.

    Food and Beverage

    • Providing food and beverages for book club meetings is almost as important as the book. Select your food choices based on the book. For example, if the book is set in Mexico, consider serving quesadillas, a salsa bar and sopapillas. Preparing food mentioned in the book is a nice accompaniment.

Think comfort foods when deciding what to make, such as brownies, chicken noodle soup or gourmet macaroni and cheese. Choose beverages based on your members. Offering a glass of wine during book club meetings creates a relaxing tone after a busy week. Make sure to have nonalcoholic beverages available as well.
