    Sacrifice

    • Explain to the children that one of the ways Christians observe Lent is by making a small sacrifice or giving something up. This is to remind Christians to notice and be grateful for God's blessings, and also to learn that following Jesus is sometimes difficult and requires effort, sacrifice and commitment. Engage the children in a discussion about when giving something up is the right thing to do (for example, in sharing with others, allowing a friend or sibling to have his way or being honest even when it comes at a cost). Have the children draw pictures of something small they intend to give up for Lent, such as candy, a television program or a favorite toy.

    Service

    • One of the important lessons of Lent is to give of oneself in serving others. Invite the children to think of ways they can be of service, such as helping out at home, assisting a classmate or sibling with homework, or visiting a home-bound member of the community. Have them return each week to report on what they have learned.

    Mortality

    • On Ash Wednesday the imposition of ashes is often accompanied with the words "Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return," a reminder of the mortality of every living thing. Engage the children in an age-appropriate discussion about death, explaining that it's OK to talk about death and that fear, sadness and even anger are normal. Invite them to talk about loved ones or pets who have died and to share what they remember most about that person or animal. Have them bring in photographs of the loved one and use them to create a wall of remembrance. Encourage them to talk about something they can do to honor the memory of this individual.

    Repentance

    • Another saying that frequently accompanies the imposition of ashes is "Repent, and believe the good news." Lent is about turning away from sin, making amends and recommitting to living a godly life. Invite the children to talk about times when they had to choose whether to do the right thing, and what the consequences were. Have them write a note to one person whom their actions may have harmed, expressing contrition and promising to make things better.
