How to Take a Paint Sample
- 1). Go to an inconspicuous space of the house where the paint that you want was used. Try inside cupboards or closets. Go to the corner of this space at floor level.
- 2). Wash the paint with a dishrag to remove any dust that might be on altering its truest color.
- 3). Take a 1/4-cup measuring cup and set it on the surface. Draw around the bottom of the cup on the wall with a pencil.
- 4). Remove the cup and cut 1/8 to 1/4 inch into the wall with a carpet knife. Follow the pencil outline while cutting.
- 5). Push the blade of a putty knife beneath the edge of the cut and scrape the paint sample off the surface.
- 6). Fill the empty space with drywall compound using the putty knife. Allow it to dry for 24 hours and then sand it smooth with a piece of 150-grit sandpaper. Prime the patch with a drywall primer using a paintbrush. The surface can now be painted with the new paint you were able to purchase with your paint sample.
