How to Grow Wintergreen

104 14
    • 1). Purchase your wintergreen seeds from a local nursery or any store that may carry them. If you cannot find a shop locally to purchase the seeds there are shops online (see Resources).

    • 2). Select a location to plant your wintergreen. The wintergreen plant flourishes in a spot that is not constantly in direct sunlight. In addition, it is best if plant in a damp yet non-murky location. The wintergreen plant does spread when it thrives, so it is best to plant it in a slightly open area.

    • 3). Chill the seeds for about four to ten weeks prior to sowing. This enables them to germinate, or sprout, more quickly.

    • 4). Till the soil for growing your wintergreen plant with a garden hoe. Mix mulch into the soil of the area you have tilled.

    • 5). Plant the seeds about 1/4-inch deep into the soil. It is imperative to keep the soil moist during the first two months.

    • 6). Dig up the wintergreen saplings and place them in individual pots once they reach 1-inch tall. Place the potted saplings in a greenhouse to grow. The potted saplings must remain indoors in a stable climate through their first winter in order to thrive. In the summer, you will be able to move the saplings back to soil.

    • 7). Transplant the saplings to soil once the weather has become a bit warmer in the summer months. The wintergreen will have to stay shielded from harsh weather conditions for the first few years of its life as the cold weather and frost can be dangerous for the saplings. Once the wintergreen is fully grown, the leaves will become larger and maintain color year round. Mature wintergreen will require minimal care outside of regular watering.
