American Baptist Ordination Requirements
- Any member of an American Baptist church can become ordained as long as all of the other requirements are met. The churches select members of their own congregation to serve as the leaders in the church. Members must be in good standing with the church to become ordained. Ministers are expected to set a good example for the rest of the congregation. Congregations take this into consideration when selecting a minister.
- Not just anyone can become a minister in the American Baptist church. To be considered, a member must have graduated with a degree in theology from an accredited seminary. A Master of Divinity is also required. Potential ministers must also have completed a course in American Baptist history during their studies. An equivalent may be considered to replace a seminary theological education.
- A person seeking ordainment must carefully consider what area of service she is interested in. A congregation will also look at an individual's gifts and talents when considering a member for an open position. Various areas of service are available in many congregations, including preaching, teaching, counseling and mission work. A statement of faith can also be beneficial to the congregation, helping members decide if the potential minister is a good fit for the position.
- Specific pieces of documentation must be turned in properly to ensure a person is ordained in the American Baptist church. A candidate assessment must be completed by the Ministerial Leadership Committee in the region. A potential minister must also sign the Ministers Council Code of Ethics and Ministry Committee's Disclosure Statements. These documents must all be on file with the church body to become ordained. A recommendation from someone in the local congregation must also be on file.
