How to Use Oven Cleaners in Gas Ovens
- 1). Prepare the oven. Turn the oven off and wait until it cools. Remove the racks. If your oven has a pilot light, cover it with something that will not burn, such as a small metal measuring cup. Never clean a continuous or self-cleaning oven by using oven cleaners. The cleaning products will ruin the surface and will prevent future use of the built-in cleaning feature.
- 2). Remove the oven control knob so you don't accidentally turn the oven on while you're cleaning it.
- 3). Sweep out as much loose debris as possible with a damp rag or sponge. If some of the baked-on food can be removed without cleaners, use a silicon or plastic scraper to loosen and remove it.
- 4). Put the racks back in the oven so you can spray the surface and the racks at the same time.
- 5). Spread newspapers below the oven to protect the floor. You'll need to put newspapers beneath the oven door if it needs spraying as well.
- 6). Spray the oven if you're using gas oven-safe commercial oven cleaner, and follow the directions on the can. Try to avoid spraying the oven's light, or simply remove it until you're ready to scrub the oven.
- 7). Put on protective gloves and remove the racks once the required time has lapsed, and place them on the counter on top of newspapers, or put them in a bathtub with a few inches of warm water.
- 8). Wet a sponge or rag to remove the cleaner and oven debris. Rinse the sponge often to get all the cleaner and dirt off the oven's surface. Clean the racks in the same manner, rinsing carefully.
- 9). Turn the oven on once it has dried, to burn off any minute amount of residue on the racks and oven surface before using it again for baking.
