How Early to Plant Grass Seed in the Spring in Pennsylvania?

104 32

    Time Frame

    • Pennsylvania State University says that fall planting is the best option for fescue, ryegrass and orchardgrass. However, the grasses can also be sown as early in the spring as April.

    Considerations

    • As long as grass seeds are not planted during the hot, dry summer, they should grow fine. The spring seedlings are not strong enough to withstand harsh weather. Plant 8 to 12 lb. of grass seed per acre, on average.

    Warning

    • Kentucky bluegrass is the one cool-season grass that should be sown in the late summer, not spring. According to the University of Pennsylvania, plant 10 to 14 lb. per acre once the temperatures begin to cool down and the rain picks up, in late summer or early fall.
