Windows always become a focal point in any room. They provide a source of light and extend the room by providing a view outside, no matter how small or large the windows. Add curtains to incorporate color, design and style into any room with windows. Cool ideas for curtains allow you to display creative, interesting looks that complement the style of your home. - Grommet-top curtains may be any length, though they are commonly found in floor-length styles. Metal grommets (holes rimmed in metal which are larger than eyelets) line the tops of the curtains. The curtain rod runs through the grommets of the curtains. The curtains themselves are usually slightly gathered to create a rippling effect.
- Valances create a sleek, clean design that adds just a touch of color and style to windows. Valances are created by placing wooden boards (usually 2 to 4 inches in width) across the top of windows, with a slight overhang (2 to 3 inches) on either side. Cover the wood with fabric in any style and texture to add a pop of color to the window design.
- Roman shades add a contemporary, romantic look to any window. Cut out two fabric panels, exactly the same size, which are the same length and width of the window itself. Place three to five thin, horizontal rods (metal, wood or plastic) at even intervals on the back side of one of the fabric panels (placement at top, middle, bottom), sewing the rods to the fabric so they're securely attached. Run thin wire or strong thread from the top to the bottom of the shade down the middle of the panel, wrapping the cordage at least once around each rod. Place one end of the wire around the bottom rod, and run it up to the top rod. Draw the wire down one side of the curtain, and let it dangle. Cover the wire with fabric or a thicker type of decorative cordage to make it more attractive. Sew the backside of the other fabric panel to the first, covering the rods and wires inside the two layers. Use the dangling end to draw the shade up in a gently folding design.
- Attach curtain rods at the middle, not the tops, of windows. Hang short, brightly-colored fabric curtains from the rods so they just reach the windowsill. The cafe curtain style allows lots of natural light to pour into the room and creates an individualized look for any room.
