Fall Arts & Crafts Ideas: Candle Painting
- Use thick white pillar candles as your canvas. Choose colors that remind you of changing leaves including shades of green, yellow, gold, red and orange. Paint a thin brown tree down the length of the candle with twisted branches. Dip a thin-tipped paint brush in one of the colors and paint the elongated shape of leaves with your fall colors. Fill in the leaves with color, and draw a thin brown line down the center of each leaf for the veins. Add only a few leaves of each color around the candle, and step back to decide where you add more. Make green squiggles around the bottom for grass, and dot a few colors in the green as fallen leaves.
- When candle painting with kids, spark their imaginations with images of Halloween. Look for a variety of candles in different shapes and sizes including green, yellow, orange and black. Use wide green candles as the face of Frankenstein's monster or a triangular candle for a cone hat-wearing witch. Paint jack-o-lanterns onto round orange candles with black paint. White candles in tall funky shapes will look like ghostly figures with simple faces added on. Turn a thick black candle into a witches' cauldron dripping with slime. Kids who know what their costume is can paint themselves trick-or-treating on the candle with an orange pail in hand.
- From corn mazes and pumpkin patches, to harvest festivals celebrating fall produce, fall is a season where communities come together to enjoy the crisp, fresh air before winter rolls in. Make a small list of all the things you love about fall and paint a tribute to the season on a set of two or three candles. Place the candles near a bowl of fruit or on the dinner table before sharing a hearty fall soup with the family. Use gold candles to symbolize golden wheat fields, or a combination of classic fall colors such as burgundy, yellow and brown. Paint a cornucopia of seasonal fruits and vegetables with dried corn husks and vibrant red cranberries. Use scented candles such as pumpkin spice, ginger bread or rich cinnamon.
- The aesthetic details of fall leave a lasting, iconic impression. Use a single, large pillar candle for a minimal design that highlights what fall means to you. Cut a sponge into the oval shape of a large leaf. Dip it in one or a combination of oranges, reds and browns. Squeeze off the excess paint from the sponge and make a few leaf impressions around the candle, angled as though in mid-flight. Use gold, black and orange to paint the face of a smiling scarecrow. If you live in the country, paint a huge yellow harvest moon against a violet colored candle with a red barn in the distance.
