How to Make Icing Roses
Icing roses are one of the easiest things to make although it looks like being one of the most difficult skills to acquire in cake decorating.
Whether adorning your cupcake cakes, a layer cake or sheet cake, these roses are ubiquitous but their creation looks complex.
However, with a few simple tips, you too can form these beautiful and delicious frosting treats.
The first order of business is to collect the items you will need to make your icing roses.
You will need icing, two icing bags with the same colour icing, two types of icing tips, a rose nail, a bit of double stick tape, and wax paper.
The two icing tips that you will need are round and slant, with the slant tip having one end of a larger width than the other.
Next you will need to cut a small two inch by two inch square of wax paper and use the double sided tape to stick it to the rose nail.
Holding the rose nail in your opposite hand, use your dominant hand to hold the round tip bag of icing and make a cone.
Then switch to the slant tip bag of icing.
Beginning at the top of the cone, make upside down U's around the cone, starting with three U's around the cone tip.
The thicker end of the slant tip should be nearest the floor.
Twist the rose nail so that the U you are working on is always in front of you.
Continue making the upside U's covering up the previous rows at the junctions where the U's meet.
This will form the rose petals surrounding the cone.
As you continue down the cone, slightly angle your wrist and therefore the petals so that they lie more flat on your icing roses.
Once you finish your icing rose, allow it to dry for thirty minutes and then carefully remove the piece of wax paper from the nail and gently slide the rose onto your baked good.
If you are decorating cupcake cakes or a standard celebration cake, your icing roses will beautifully accent your cakes and be admired by all!
