How to Cover Dark Red Paint
- 1). Place drop cloths on the floor and on furniture to prevent damage from primer and paint splatters. Tape off any molding and other objects you don't want to paint.
- 2). Open a can of quality water-based primer. Stir the primer with a wood paint-stirring stick to thoroughly mix the primer before using.
- 3). Apply a thin coat of primer to the red wall with a roller or paintbrush. Allow the primer to dry following the manufacturer's recommendations for drying time. Apply a second thin coat of primer with the roller or brush and once again allow to dry.
- 4). Open the can of lighter-colored wall paint. Mix the paint thoroughly with a wood paint-stirring stick before using.
- 5). Paint a small area of the primed wall with the lighter color paint as a test. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly and examine the area to determine if the red color will show or bleed through.
- 6). Continue painting with the lighter-color wall paint if the red does not show through. If the red does show through, apply a third coat of primer to the wall. Allow all coats of primer or paint to thoroughly dry before applying another coat.
