How to Care for an Italian Everbearing Fig Tree Plant
- 1). Water the Italian fig tree generously with a soaker hose after planting and throughout the first growing season. Deep water to a depth of 1 inch. An inch of water per week is required for most trees. Once the fig tree is established, supplemental watering is required in lieu of rain.
- 2). Spread a 3- to 4-inch layer of straw or bark around the trunk of the Italian everbearing fig to promote good drainage and deter weed growth. Keep the mulch at least 6 inches from the trunk to reduce pest infestations.
- 3). Fertilize the Italian everbearing fig tree plant with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. Apply the fertilizer according to manufacturer's instructions. Most Italian fig trees appreciate a dose of fertilizer in early spring and early to midsummer.
- 4). Remove dead or damaged branches from the Italian everbearing fig tree plant using pruning shears or a pruning saw. Inward-growing branches also require removal during pruning. Periodic pruning will keep the fig tree looking neat and tidy.
- 5). Keep sheets, tarps, plastic or blankets on hand for unexpected drops in temperature. Italian fig trees cannot tolerate temperatures below 25 degree F. Lightly draping the fig trees will help keep the trees warm at night.
