The Best Ways to Clean Cat Litter Boxes
- When using regular cat litter, it is important to get the box as clean as possible each time that you clean. Regular cat litter isn't scoopable, so at least once every three or four days, you will need to completely clean the box. The best way to do this is to dump out the cat litter box completely. If you do this every three or four days, you will find that there is not as much need to do a full cleaning. Simply dump the cat litter into the garbage, and refill the litter box with clean litter.
- When you use scoopable cat litter, it is much easier to clean and maintain a box. First, make sure that you set a scooping schedule, which will give you a chance to scoop once every three or four days. When it is a scooping day, remove the cover of the cat litter box, if you have one. Use a litter scoop. Put it into the litter box, and put it underneath the lumps of litter that have been soiled on. As you lift the litter scoop, you'll find that the soiled parts are pulled out. Throw the soiled parts into the trash, and you should be left with clean litter. Continue to use the scoop to pull out soiled chunks.
- In both scoopable litter and non-scoopable litter, it is important to keep the litter as clean as possible. Buy a litter deodorizer and add it to the litter whenever you change the box. If you don't want to purchase a deodorizer, you can use baking soda. Simply sprinkle it into the litter box and stir it around with your litter scoop. As your cat scratches in the box, it will activate the deodorizer.
