What is a Bungalow House?

104 37

    Meaning

    • A bungalow has a single story and a sloping roof. "Bungalow" comes from the Hindi "bangla." It literally meant "in the Bengalese style," referring to the distinctive type of houses in the Indian state of Bengal. The word first appeared in the English language in the late 17th century.

    Characteristics

    • Traditionally, the bungalows of Bengal had thatched roofs and wide verandas. Typical features included gables, large fireplaces and open-plan designs. Modern bungalows may adopt any style, but they still often have a porch or veranda.

    Occupants

    • The original bungalows temporarily housed British officers during the days of the British Empire (the Raj) in India. The modern bungalow's single floor makes it ideal for the retired and elderly.
