How to Draw a Realistic Horse Fall
- 1). Review your reference picture of a horse fall. You can find several reference pictures by following the link in the Resource section below. Make note of the way the horse's body is positioned while falling. If you are drawing a rider falling with the horse, look at how the human body looks while falling as well.
- 2). Practice drawing a horse falling. Press lightly with your pencil and do not erase any of your mistakes. Review your reference picture and focus on understanding the structure and figure of the horse. Draw the limbs of the horse individually and identify how the joints bend.
- 3). Sketch the horse falling in different poses. Do not try to create a finished picture, focus on visualizing the body of a horse as it falls. If drawing a rider, create the outline of the his body falling as well. Continue practicing until your feel ready to draw your horse picture.
- 1). Sketch the rough draft of your horse. Map out its head by drawing a long oval, sketch a vertical line down the center of the oval to map the horses facial features. Extend a line from the back of the horse's head to map out its spine. Curve the spine as needed to match the pose of your horse falling. Create the torso and hindquarters of your horse by drawing two squares along the spine. Curve the sides of the squares to follow the horse's pose. Draw two lines extending from the torso and two lines extending from the hips to map the legs of your horse.
- 2). Draw the outline of your horse using your rough draft as a guide. Start by drawing the shape of the horse's head by curving the sides of your oval. Add ears onto the top of the horse's head and sketch the nostrils at the end of the snout. Create the neck and body of the horse by following your guidelines drawn previously. Use curved lines on each part of the horse, never draw a body part in a static position. Follow the bend of the horse's spine to keep pose of the its body.
- 3). Pencil the legs of your horse. Make sure to draw the bulges of the shoulders and the curve of the legs. Follow your outline to keep the fall of the horse realistic. Draw the basic shape of the horse's tail using the hind legs as a guide. Draw the mouth and eyes of your horse by following the facial guideline drawn previously.
- 4). Erase the markings of your rough draft. If drawing a rider onto your horse, sketch his basic outline using the horse as a guide. Capture the natural fall of the rider by bending the body slightly inwards, the arms extended forwards, and the riders legs bent at the knees. Use the direction of the horse's fall to map the position of the rider.
- 5). Draw the details of your horse and rider. Sketch lines on the horse's shoulders, neck, and legs to create the distinction of muscles. Draw the clothing of your rider by following his basic outline. Lightly sketch the folds of his clothing. Review your picture and check the proportions of your figures and adjust any areas as needed.
- 6). Erase any extra smudges and markings found in your drawing. Shade your picture lightly by penciling in the darkest shadows first. Slowly darken your entire picture over, creating the shadows, middle tones and highlights to complete your drawing.
