6 Key Tips on How to Successfully Apply Metal Paint

103 27
It's always important before you apply metal paint to make sure you have the right equipment and of course a good quality metal paint.
What many people don't pay enough attention to though is the preparation.
If the preparation is not done properly then there is every chance the finished product will look substandard.
To ensure the item you are going to paint has been properly prepared I recommend you follow these six step-by-step instructions - 1.
Empty some strong liquid cleaner such as sugar soap into a bucket of warm water and use your scrubbing brush to scrub away any sign of dust and grime from the surface you are to paint.
2.
Remove any sign of the soapy cleaning solution from the metal by washing it off with water and then allow to dry or wipe with a dry cloth 3.
If there is any sign of old or flaky paint on the surface to be painted use your wire brush to scrub it off if you can 4.
Use sandpaper or steel wool to roughen the metal surface to allow the primer to bond properly to the metal.
Then use a clean wet rag to wipe the surface.
It is mentioned that the grade of sandpaper (light or heavy grit) you use will depend a lot on the object to be painted.
5.
Either an oil-based primer or good water-based "corrosion control" primer can be used.
A double coat of primer is recommended to keep at bay any future corrosion problems and should be left to dry thoroughly.
Should the metal object you are about to paint contain copper then a metal paint primer that has properties to counteract discoloration of the finished coat should be used.
6.
Make your mind up on whether you want a finish with a flat, semi-gloss or high gloss metal paint then purchase a good quality metal paint.
Also buy good paint brushes and apply two coats of your chosen paint for a long-lasting result.
There are also many very good 'one coat' quick drying metal paints available these days that give excellent coverage.
If a large area such as a roof needs to be painted, it can easily rolled or sprayed by the home handyman in most cases, provided of course the proper equipment is used.
