Bird Food for Finches From the Kitchen
- Fruits that attract finches include raisins, currants, apples and oranges. To make a nutritious, fruity feed for finches, mix equal parts dried apples, raisins and nuts and half as much diced prunes and melon seeds. Place the mixture in a feeder and keep any unused portions dry and cool.

Goldfinches in particular eat suet, or rendered beef fat, which is also popular with many other species. Make suet cakes by melting ground suet with a bit of water and allowing it to set up in muffin tins. Add seeds or nuts to attract more species of birds. - You can further enhance the diet of finches with peanut butter, peanuts and other nuts. Goldfinches especially come to a feeder to eat peanuts with the shells removed, and crunchy peanut butter. A bit of grit, such as cornmeal, can make the peanut butter less sticky for the birds.
