What is I Ching Astrology?

An Introduction to the first FREE on-line video course describing this extraordinary and insightful ancient astrological system.

By Jon Sandifer

I Ching Astrology is widely recognised as the most ancient astrological system. Over 5,000 years old, it originally hails from Tibet and uses the same symbolism and philosophy as the worlds oldest book, the I Ching, or Book of Changes.

As ancient as it is, of all the Chinese Astrological Systems, it is the most simple to use. You can easily find out:
- About yourself and the others in your life.
- How best to spend your time and direct your energy in any month or year.
- The most advantageous places to be in.

Deeply rooted in nature, I Ching Astrology was once known as the farmers almanac. Its signs are named after the elements, the seasons and other imagery from the natural world. Scientists are convinced the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching anticipated the genetic code.

Its amazing influence further extends into the digital age; the father of computer code Gotfried Leibnitz developed the binary system from his study of the I Ching.

Without it, almost unbelievably, you would not be reading this on your computer screen today.

I Ching Astrology takes into account the 8 Trigrams of the I Ching and the central position around which they all rotate known as the Tai Chi. This gives a total of 9 Stars.

These Trigrams relate to the compass directions of North, South, East, West, and also to the inter-cardinal directions of North-East, South-East, South-West and North-West.

They also incorporate the symbolism from each of the Trigrams, for example, Mountain, Wind, or Thunder, and the archetypal family members for each Trigram, which include the Father, the Mother, and six children.

All of these Stars rotate in 9-year, 9-month and 9-day cycles. For me, it is very similar to traditional navigation. It is very helpful when we need to understand what is going on in our lives at any given moment and making decisions based on that information.

I Ching Astrology uses the first day of Spring as the beginning of the year, which in most cases is 4 February.

Your Birth Star
This is the driving force behind your personality and is determined by the year in which you were born. It is the most important of the three Stars as it underlies all your actions. It is also the Star that you need to be aware of as far as knowing what House you occupy in any given year and month and other aspects of I Ching Astrology.

Your Inner Star
This Star has two important qualities. Firstly, it represents who you were during your first two passes round the 9 year cycle until you reached 18 years of age and entered adulthood. In other words, this is your childhood profile. You only fully evolve into your Birth Star persona at around the age of 18 years. Secondly, in most situations in life, when you are under pressure you often revert to your childhood way of expression, so your Inner Star reflects how you express yourself when you are stressed out. This hidden side of your personality is only seen by those close to you.

Your Outer Star
This reflects the side of your personality perceived by others who do not know you very well. This is the first impression that people pick up on when they meet you. It relates to how you choose to live in the world, For example, how you keep your home tidy, how you choose to dress or socialise and where you shop. If I were to ask a neighbour of yours, who did not know you very well, for an opinion based on their first impressions of you, their comments would be based on the qualities of your Outer Star. In a nutshell, it is how you appear to the world.
