    • Televisions have few parts that can break.old television image by inacio pires from Fotolia.com

Fortunately, televisions rarely need to be repaired. They don't have many moving parts, which makes them less likely to suffer from wear. When a television does have problems, some simple techniques often can be used to address them. Some problems can be fixed by anyone with some familiarity with electronics, while others only can be fixed by a TV technician. A few questions may help fix the TV, or lead to a decision to replace it.

Is It Time to Replace the TV?

    • Before trying to repair a television set, compare the cost of replacing it with the likely cost of repairs. If the price of replacing it is low enough in comparison, repairs might not be desirable, according to Fix It Club. On the bright side: Newer TVs tend to be designed better than older ones, and are less likely to break down.

    Have the Settings Changed?

    • When a television is not working, the problem might be as simple as an incorrect setting or interference with the digital signal. Fixing the settings with the remote control might require that you get out the owner's manual, according to Fix It Club. Unless it's something you're doing, there is little that can be done about interference other than wait for the interference to pass.

    Does the TV Need Degaussing?

    • Televisions that have color blotches on their screens might have become magnetized. TVs usually have features that demagnetize them; turning the TV on and off will often take care of the color blotches, according to Fix It Club. If this simple fix does not work, using degaussing coils can demagnetize the picture tube easily.

    Could a Wire Have Broken?

    • Sometimes when a television is not working, something has gone wrong with one of its wires. Broken wires on newer TVs usually only occur after something has caused a lot of heat, vibration or shock. However, televisions suffer wear over the years, and both sound and video quality can diminish, according to Fix It Club. At times, small electric wires on circuit boards pop off because the manufacturers try to use minimal amounts of solder. If you can find the break, soldering the wire back into place can fix the TV, according to Master TV Repairman.

    Is It Just a Quirk?

    • Sometimes, quirky things can happen on the TV, according to Master TV Repairman. Turning the TV off and then back on may remove occasional quirks. If that doesn't work, the problem might be particular to the TV, and the owner's manual will need to be consulted.
