Drinking to Sleep Does drinking really help you sleep or is it some ritual that many have been following for centuries? Alcohol actually prevents your brain from entering into the REM stage of sleep.
When your body does not enter the REM stage of sleep, your body does not go into a deeper sleep; making you really feel un-rested when you wake up.
Other times when one drinks to sleep they might wake up early once the alcohol has worn off.
Alcohol also prevents your kidneys from absorbing water, causing you to urinate more throughout the night; which obviously would disrupt the amount you sleep.
And some times depending on the person alcohol can also give you a massive headache in the morning.
Therefore, alcohol is not a proper substitute for a person who suffers from sleep deprivation or depression.
