Breast Cancer Awareness Project
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Creating an awareness bracelet can give hope and encouragement to everyone who is committed to fighting and eradicating this life-threatening disease. Experience the power of pink. Help raise awareness and generate funds for your local breast cancer organization by making this bracelet for sponsoring the annual "Race for the Cure".
You will need: two pair of pliers, a beaded bracelet, charms, jump rings(one for every charm), and any other decorations you might want.
Step 1: You can string your own beaded bracelet, but I took one that I have and I laid it out before me. If you would like to make your own bracelet you will need 7 - 6mm metal beads, 20 - 3mm metal beads, 13 - Swarovski Round Elements, metal bracelet wire, and metal links.
Step 2: A center piece makes your design stands out. Choose the best looking charm which might be a little larger than the others, but it does not have to be. Lay the charms out below the bracelet as if they were already attached; this way you can change the charms around and get the order you want, to avoid needless tool marks on the jump rings.
Step 3: Using the pliers, open a jump ring by twisting. Be careful not to over extend the ring or it might break. Slip on the charm and position the bracelet. inside the ring.
Step 4: Gently twist the split ring back and forth to its original shape until the edges are even.
Step 5: Repeat Steps 3 and 4 and continue adding charms until they are all on the bracelet. Do not replace the jump rings with large one because the charms could slide around on the bracelet. Small jump rings are better for keeping the charms in place.
You can find pictures of the finished bracelet in the "About the Author Section".
Notes:
- It does not matter how many charms you have on your bracelet, just as long as it is balanced, but not identical. If you look at the bracelet that I designed, there is a center piece (heart) and four charms on each side (shoe, ribbon, message, ribbon); the charms have the same shapes but they have different patterns and slightly different sizes. Usually an uneven number of charms is more interesting.
- When you attach the charms to the bracelet, make sure that all the charms are facing the same direction when you lay it flat on the table. This way, people can see all the charms when you wear your awareness bracelet.
History of Breast Cancer Awareness Month:
October is national breast cancer awareness month. It was started in 1985 and is celebrated in over twenty countries. Some people join awareness groups advocating for research and solidarity. In the United States many people join the annual Susan G. Komen "Race for the Cure", which is an annual three day event in which people walk 60 miles to support, share stories, and united in the effort to eliminate breast cancer.
