How to Start a Walnut Tree From Seed
- 1). Fill a bucket with water and place the nuts inside. Allow the nuts to soak for 24 hours and then remove them and peel off the husks.
- 2). Refill the bucket with water and rinse the nuts. Discard any nuts that float to the top as they are not viable.
- 3). Refrigerate the nuts in a plastic bag placed in the refrigerator for 120 days.
- 4). Remove all weeds, grasses and other plants in a 2-foot radius around where the nut will be planted.
- 5). Remove one end of the tin can and, using a chisel or other sharp instrument, cut an "x" in the other end. Pry up the edges of the x so that they are pointing up.
- 6). Add 2 inches of soil to the can and drop in the walnut. Fill the can with soil, covering the nut.
- 7). Dig a planting hole deep enough to completely cover the can with an inch of soil above it. Place the open end down in the planting hole and cover the can with soil. Be careful of the sharp ends that are sticking up. The walnut seedling may sprout within four to five weeks or may not show up until the following spring, so mark the planting area for future reference.
