How to Ruin Your Coffee

103 16
I'll admit that I always thought that the best way to store coffee was in my freezer.
It made sense, I put my steaks and fish that I want to last longer in the freezer, but it was completely wrong to store my coffee in the freezer.
To put it simply, freezing coffee is almost the worse possible thing that you can do to your coffee.
The problem is that coffee is porous.
That's a good thing because it absorbs the syrups and flavors that create the flavors and taste.
However, it's also a bad thing.
The porous nature of coffee allows absorb the flavors and smells from other things in your fridge like frozen steaks, fish and anything else you store there.
I love flavored coffees, but not fish flavored coffee.
Freezing also causes the coffee's flavor to disappear.
Freezing breaks down the oils that give it's flavor.
If you needed another reason, to not store it in the fridge, moisture also causes the coffee to deteriorate.
If you think about it, it makes sense.
You don't buy your coffee in the freezer section at the grocery store and the neighborhood coffee shop doesn't look like an ice cream shop.
The same goes for your refrigerator.
Don't put the coffee in their either.
The moisture ruins coffee and think about all of the diverse smells that you have in the fridge - cheeses, vegetables, etc.
Not exactly what I want my coffee tasting like.
Other coffee killers include air, light and heat.
That means don't store it out on the counter near a window or the oven.
Don't buy coffee in bulk either.
Coffee lasts for only a week or two (depending on which expert you ask) so only buy as much coffee as you'll drink in that time.
