Texas Terry Labonte Steps Aside For Kyle Busch
Two-time NEXTEL Cup Champion Terry Labonte and team owner Rick Hendrick announced today that Terry will run a limited schedule in 2005 moving over to the #44 car. This announcement makes way for 19 year old phenom Kyle Busch to take over the #5 car next year. Kyle is the younger brother of Kurt Busch and has huge potential.
It has been time for Terry to step aside for a couple of years now and I'm happy to see him do so before he becomes irrelevant.
Darrell Waltrip and Richard Petty both stayed in the sport way too long and I'm happy to see Terry not make the same mistake.
On the other side of this announcement, Kyle Busch has an unnatural ability to handle a race car. From what I've seen of him so for there is little doubt that he can be better than his older brother. That's a pretty strong statement considering that Kurt is currently leading the points standings.
This change has been rumored since the teams were in Charlotte in May for the Coca-Cola 600.
Hendrick Motorsports certainly stands to benefit here as this will rejuvenate support for Kellogg's and Terry's part-time farewell tour as they celebrate his successful career. Plus they get to continue development of a potential legend in their stable by bringing Kyle along to the next level.
