Constructing the Purse

• All purse frames require that you fully construct the purse before applying the frame. Choose a size and weight for your purse that works with the purse frame you've chosen. You can make a structured bag with dividers and pockets or a softer one; however, the top edge should be shaped to fit your hinged purse frame. Fabric, leather, bead work and knitting can all be used with purse frames. Make a lining for your bag, leaving an opening to turn the bag right side out. Place the purse outer and lining right sides together, sew along the top and turn to the right side through the opening in the purse lining. This provides you with a finished edge for the purse frame.
  
  

Sew-On Frames

• Sew-on purse frames have small sewing holes in the frame. You should use a strong thread in a color that matches your purse and a suitably sized needle to sew your purse to the purse frame. Line the bag up to the frame, matching the corners. Sew the purse frame securely onto your purse. If you are working with a larger sew-on frame, you may want to go over your stitches twice for additional security. Knot your thread securely when you reach the end, then run the threaded needle between the bag lining and outer to bury the ends of your thread.
  
  

Glue Frames

• Many larger purse frames simply glue into place. Sew your purse and lining separately, leaving an opening in the bottom or side seam of the purse lining. Turn the outer wrong side out then place the lining with the right side facing out inside the outer purse fabric. Stitch along the top seam. Trim the seam allowance and clip curves as needed, then turn to the right side. Press well. Stitch the opening in the lining closed by hand. Apply a small amount of industrial grade adhesive around the upper edge of the bag and fit the purse frame into place. Allow the glue to dry thoroughly.
  
  

Crimped Frames

• While glue-on or sew-on frames are the most common options, you can also find frames that crimp into place. You may use glue as well with a crimped purse frame for a more secure finish. In order to properly crimp the purse frame, you will need a specialty tool called a purse crimper, or you will need to modify a pair of pliers or woodworking clamps for this purpose. The crimper should have broad, flat, non abrasive surfaces. Apply the purse frame to the finished edge of the purse, then use the crimper tool to press the frame firmly into place.
