How to Repaint the Stone Walls in a Cellar
- 1). Remove the previous paint with a brass bristle brush. The brass is hard enough to remove the paint but soft enough not to mar the stone. Do not apply too much pressure on the stone as you brush it.
- 2). Clean the wall of all dirt and debris with soap and water. Brush it with a soft cloth to remove any small particles still adhering to the wall.
- 3). Tape off all areas that are not to be painted.
- 4). Seal the wall with a brick sealant if you don't want the paint to sink into the porous stone. Alternately, do not seal it but spray each section with water from a spray bottle before painting. This allows the paint to sink slightly into the surface of the stone, but makes it more difficult to remove the paint later.
- 5). Paint the mortar lines between the blocks with a brush big enough to saturate the area and leave a thick coat behind.
- 6). Roll paint onto the stone with a heavy nap roller made for painting stucco. Work the roller back and forth to ensure all the small crevices in the stone are filled with paint. The stone may require a second coat after drying.
