Falafel Recipe
From the smell to the taste, falafel is a simple wonderful food.
Simple to prepare and full of rich flavors and aromas that are unique to this Middle Eastern specialty.
If you have tried a warm falafel sandwich there is no doubt in my mind you get a wonderful sensation when remembering its taste.
If you have yet to try a falafel, well what are you waiting for!? Make a batch of these wonderful treats, grab some pita bread, tahini sauce and vegetables and have a party! Everyone will certainly be impressed by your new found knowledge of worldly foods and your ability to create such a delicious treat.
Finding a good falafel recipe can be a challenge.
However, blending everything together in perfect balance once a good recipe has been found can be where the real challenge lies.
These spiced fried "balls" or fritters are typically made from chickpeas, but dried fava beans or a combination of both has been used.
It is great as an appetizer, sandwich or even as a stuffing for vegetables.
Use your imagination, get cooking and enjoy! Serves 8-10 Ingredients: - 2 cups dried chickpeas, washed, cleaned and soaked in lots of water for 10-12 hours - 1 medium onion, finely chopped or processed - 3-4 garlic cloves, crushed - 1 tsp each cumin, coriander - ¼ tsp each salt and ground pepper - 1 tbsp chopped fresh dill or dry - 1 cup chopped fresh parsley or dry - ½ tsp cayenne pepper - Vegetable oil for frying Method: - Drain chickpeas and place in food processor until a paste forms.
- Place in a large mixing bowl and add the onions, garlic, cumin, coriander, salt and pepper, dill, parsley and cayenne pepper.
- Mix well into a firm paste.
- Using a small ice cream scooper, form into small balls.
- In a deep pan, heat vegetable oil.
- Fry the falafel balls until golden brown.
They will float to the top when finished.
- Remove and drain on a paper towel.
- Serve in pita bread with salad and tahini sauce.
Note: Be sure to let the Falafel sit for just a bit after taking them out of the oil because they will be very hot.
Serve as a sandwich with pita or a wrap and drizzle with tahini sauce or garlic yogurt dressing.
You may also serve falafel over a salad with chickpeas, tomato, and cucumber with a drizzle of tahini.
