How to Stop Bees & Hornets on Mailboxes
- 1). Inspect the mailbox on a daily basis. Use a stick, broom or high-powered hose to destroy the beginnings of any nests you see. Wear protective clothing, for example, hat, gloves and long pants, when doing this, or have somebody else destroy the nest pieces if you are allergic to stings.
- 2). Close off any holes, cracks or other openings on the mailbox with aluminum foil or spackling paste. This keep bees and hornets from entering the inside of the box.
- 3). Mix equal parts vinegar and lukewarm water inside a spray bottle. Then, spray the inside and outside of the mailbox. Dry the mailbox with a soft cloth. This removes any odors that attract bees and hornets to the mailbox.
- 4). Wipe the inside and outside of the mailbox with bar body soap. According to the Earth Easy website (eartheasy.com), such soaps repel pests. Perform this step a few times during the warm summer months to keep bees and hornets away.
- 5). Hang a fake nest on or very close to the mailbox. Bees and hornets see the nest and stay away from the mailbox to avoid a conflict with the perceived threat.
