Assisted Living 101

102 17
What is assisted living? Have you ever seen those commercials on TV that advertise assisted living and assistedliving facilities? Ironically, these commercials that are supposed to be advertising senior living facilities for those that can no longer care for themselves always show senior citizens running around playing active games and living life as healthily as any young adult would. The senior citizens you see on these assisted living commercials do not live in assisted living facilities. Don't judge assisted living facilities by their commercials or brochures, or even by a scheduled tour. The best way to judge an assisted living facility that will be potentially taking care of your senior loved one is by making unannounced visit,

Any good assisted living facilities advertise scheduled tours and visits for those considering placing their beloved senior in the care of some sort of assisted living housing. But think about it, why do these assistedliving facilities want you to schedule a tour? So that they can make sure you see their assisted living communities at their very best! You don't want to see your potential senior living communities at their very best, you want to see your potential senior living communities at their average state. What will your beloved senior be living in the majority of the time? So make a list of potential assisted living facilities and drop by unannounced for a tour.

The first thing you should take note of when walking into assisted living facilities is the smell. While keeping in mind that these assisted living facilities are basically giant houses filled with old, sick people, there should never be any overpowering odors in these senior living communities. Assisted living facilities should smell lived in but not neglected. Cleanliness is a very important part of health in any communities, including senior living facilities. Make sure your potential assisted living facilities smell lived in but not dirty.

When visiting assisted living facilities, you should also keep in mind that a senior citizen does not come to live at an assisted living housing place because he wants to. Nobody wants to live in assisted living. A senior citizen comes to live at assisted living housing facilities because he needs help and can no longer take care of himself. Remember this as you walk the halls and see sickly senior citizens all over the place. But you should also take not of the care these senior citizens are receiving and how they are responding to the care being offered to them by the assisted living facilities employees. Are the nurses and care givers loving and gentle and kind? Doing their very best to help each senior in their care feel as comfortable as possible? Or are the nurses and care givers short tempered and impatient? Take special not of the care your beloved senior will be receiving in each assisted living housing facility.

While there are some dumpy assisted living facilities out there, there are also some very nice, very top notch senior living communities just waiting to be discovered by you and your senior. Good luck on your search for the best assisted living facilities in your area!
