Maurice Clarett
Position:
Running Back
School: Ohio State
Status: (suspended)
Height:
5-11
Weight:
230
40-Yard Dash:
4.55 (est.)
Positives:
Maurice Clarett has excellent size and impressive running skills. He runs with strength, power, and balance. He can run over people as much as make people miss. He's the type of runner who can control games and seems to get better the more he carries the ball. He has good vision and a tremendous burst through the hole.
He's also a patient runner who will wait for a hole to open before hitting it.
Clarett ran for 1,237 yards, leading the national champion Buckeyes in rushing as a freshman despite missing all of three games and parts of two others with a shoulder injury. He is also a solid blocker and a dangerous receiving threat out of the backfield.
Negatives:
He was banged up a bit as a freshman, leaving his durability as a concern. He lacks experience, having played less than a full season at the college level, and he has not played a down of football in over a year. There are also serious concerns about his character after off-field issues cost him his career at Ohio State.
Projection:
Any team considering spending a high draft pick on Clarett will no doubt take a very close look at the issues that got the Buckeyes tailback suspended from Ohio State. He has a tremendous amount of talent, but he also carries a lot of baggage. In my view, he has second-round talent, but the less-than-desirable traits he brings with him could cause him to slip as far as day two of the draft.
