Taking a shot at predicting the Philadelphia Eagles 53-man roster
Here we are.
The longest five weeks are upon us where teams take a break from the offseason until August rolls around and training camps begin. With not much going on right about now, it seems like an opportune time to take a stab at what the final roster could look like come Week One.
Quarterbacks (3): Sam Bradford, Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow
Sam Bradford is the guy for this offense. Whenever he’s ready to go, he’ll take the job.
Mark Sanchez will continue to be the starter until the former Ram is healthy. Matt Barkley is the odd man out here with Tebow presenting more options, including starting experience and a better fit in the read-option scheme.
Running backs (4): DeMarco Murray, Ryan Matthews, Darren Sproles, Matthew Tucker
Chip Kelly loves to run, which is why four running backs will make the squad. Murray will be the workhorse with Matthews getting a healthy workload, as well. Sproles will be the change-of-pace back with more of his touches coming on catches. With so much strain placed on this group, Tucker grabs the fourth spot as a decent option down on the depth chart.
Wide Receivers (6): Jordan Matthews, Nelson Agholor, Riley Cooper, Josh Huff, Miles Austin, Seyi Ajirotutu
This group is surprisingly deeper than many expected. If Agholor develops into what some believe he can be this season, the Eagles will have a solid group with loads of potential. Matthews should be even better in his second year, as should Huff.
Cooper and Austin are question marks, but both veterans should find a way to contribute. Ajirotutu is a special teams ace who has made some impressive catches in the offseason.
Tight ends (3): Zach Ertz, Brent Celek, Trey Burton
A very steady group, Ertz is poised for his breakout season while Celek will continue to do “Brent Celek things.” Burton is very versatile, making him a useful piece for Kelly.
Offensive line (9): Jason Peters, Lane Johnson, Jason Kelce, Allen Barbre, Matthew Tobin, Andrew Gardner, David Molk, Brett Boyko, Dennis Kelly
Peters, Johnson, Kelce, Barbre and Tobin will be the starters up front in what should be a solid group. Past that, the team has some questions with its depth. Gardner and Molk have a little experience as backups while Kelly has some versatility on the line. Boyko was a hot pickup as an undrafted free agent, which suggests the team sees something in him.
Defensive line (6): Fletcher Cox, Bennie Logan, Vinny Curry, Cedric Thornton, Beau Allen, Taylor Hart
Cox, Logan, Curry and Thornton are locks with Allen also a heavy favorite. Hart gets in over Brandon Bair but not by much. In fact, if Kelly decides to add a seventh lineman here, it’ll be Bair.
Inside linebacker (5): Kiko Alonso, Mychal Kendricks, DeMeco Ryans, Jordan Hicks, Najee Goode
Alonso and Kendricks will give the Eagles one of its best groups in the middle with Ryans providing veteran leadership behind them. Hicks looks like a sneaky pickup in the draft while Goode takes the final spot despite his injury last season.
Outside linebacker (5): Connor Barwin, Brandon Graham, Marcus Smith, Bryan Braman, Brad Jones
Barwin and Graham will be the starters with Smith, despite his lack of playing time this offseason, earning a spot in what will be his final chance to prove himself after his first round selection a year ago. Braman and Jones provide depth, but are more so utilized for their special teams play.
Cornerbacks (5): Byron Maxwell, Nolan Carroll, Brandon Boykin, Eric Rowe, JaCorey Sheppard
Maxwell signed a big deal this offseason to be the team’s top corner. Carroll and Rowe will battle for the starting spot outside while Boykin will hold his position in the slot. Sheppard has been a pleasant surprise through OTAs. Jaylen Watkins just misses out on a spot.
Safeties (4): Malcom Jenkins, Walter Thurmond, Chris Maragos, Chris Prosinski
Jenkins is the general of this group with Thurmond working extremely hard this offseason in his move from the outside to safety. Maragos and Prosinski are two more talented special teamers. Earl Wolff’s time comes to an end.
Specialists (3): Cody Parkey, Donnie Jones, Jon Dorenbos
This group won’t change. Three very players at their respective players.
