Emerald is 16 years old, and has been diabetic for seven years now. We treat her with a good high protein low carb diet, and twice daily injections. Caring for a diabetic cat is very overwhelming at first, but is something that is pretty easy once you get used to it, and completely worth it.
She absolutely is the matriarch of our clan of six cats total.
