Will It Work if I Try to Solder a Prong for the Electric Cord That Broke Off My Fan?
- It may be possible to solder a broken prong back onto an electrical plug, depending on the manner of the break and the strength of the solder being used. The prong, however, will not be as strong as it was originally and could easily break again. If it breaks inside of a wall outlet, it may arc in the outlet and could potentially start a fire.
- It is relatively inexpensive to purchase a replacement plug for an electrical cord from almost any hardware or home improvement store. These replacement plugs are easy to install with few tools and, once properly installed, present no more risk of an electrical fire than do brand new electrical plugs.
- While it may be possible to solder a prong broken off of a fan's electrical plug back into place, and it may work, it is not advisable. The prong will never be as strong as it once was and will always be a potential fire hazard. Replacing the plug is inexpensive, easy and safe.
