    Planning through Personality

    • Your teen daughter may have many ideas when it comes to modifying her bedroom: paint colors, art, furniture and accessories. The redecorating process may start out as a jumble of ideas reflecting the many facets of her personality, which can be overwhelming for the teen and for her parents.

If this is the case with your daughter, have her look through home design magazines and websites to identify room styles, colors, patterns and textures that appeal to her taste. Once the ideas are compiled, look through her selections to help her find recurring style elements. Perhaps you will find she is attracted to calming colors and modern furniture or prefers a cozy bedroom with warm woods and rich textures. This process will help the both of you focus in on the aspects of her personality that should be displayed in the bedroom.

    Room Arrangement

    • A teen girl's bedroom serves many functions and operates as many rooms in one. Not only will your daughter sleep in her room, she will also study, entertain, relax and beautify there. Because of this, careful consideration should go into planning the room arrangement.

If there is minimal space in the bedroom for furniture consider a loft bed with a workstation underneath. This will provide a study area without taking up extra floor space. Is it important for your teen to have plenty of room for entertaining friends? Try incorporating a trundle bed, area rugs, plush chairs and/or floor pillows to provide extra lounging space for guests. Is your teen in need of additional storage to house new clothes, jewelry, makeup and accessories? Consider a wardrobe that incorporates a vanity or utilize space around and above the bed by using shelves instead of a headboard.

Having an understanding of your teenage daughter's needs and desires for her room will make the process of planning and arranging the room much easier and less stressful.

    Avoid Fads

    • It may be tempting for your teen (and even parents) to create a room that focuses on a current fad in teen pop-culture. This should be avoided for several reasons. First, fads come and go. It is likely that your teen's tastes will evolve as well. That is why it is important to focus on your daughter's personality when designing her room, not her love of a certain fad. Second, fads are expensive. Licensed merchandise, along with fad furniture and accessories, can strain your wallet.

Look for classic art, accessories and furnishings that still fit with your daughter's personality. This will allow her room to be enjoyable for a longer period of time and adaptable throughout her teenage years.
