Instructions for Swirl Crochet Motif
- With the first color yarn, referred to as MC for "main color," chain (ch) 2, then single crochet (sc) 6 times in the second chain from the hook to create the center for your motif. Do not join rounds. Place a bobby pin or stitch marker on the last stitch to mark the end of the round and move it as you complete subsequent rounds to keep your place.
Change to your second color, referred to as CC or "contrasting color," and single crochet twice in each stitch around for a total of 12 stitches in the second round. Change color between MC and CC every round to create the swirl pattern in the motif.
For the third round, single crochet in the next stitch and make two single crochet stitches in the next stitch for the increase. Repeat these two sets of stitches around for a total of 18 stitches for round three.
In round four, single crochet in the next TWO stitches and then work the increase. Repeat this pattern around, ending up with 24 stitches total. In round five, single crochet in the next THREE stitches, then increase and repeat this around, for a total of 30 stitches. You can see a pattern establishing itself. For subsequent rows, you will add one to the number of stitches you stitch before the increase. So for round six, it will be four stitches, then increase. For round seven, it will be five stitches then the increase. Each round will have a total number of stitches that is a multiple of six, since that is the number of stitches you are adding through increases each round.
Continue changing colors and adding new rounds to the motif until it is the size you want it to be. When you are done, join the final round with a slip stitch in the first single crochet of the previous round and fasten off.
