Battlefield Promotion

Definition:

In professional golf, the term "battlefield promotion" refers to a mechanism by which a golfer on the Web.com Tour automatically moves up to the PGA Tour without having to go through Q-School or Web.com Tour Finals.

If a golfer on the Web.com Tour, which is the PGA Tour's developmental circuit, wins three times in the same season, he receives a "battlefield promotion" and immediately moves up to the PGA Tour following the third victory.

Officially, this practice is referred to by the PGA Tour as the "three-victory promotion" or "three-win promotion." However, almost everyone, including tour officials, commonly calls it the "battlefield promotion."

The battlefield promotion was introduced to the Web.com Tour in 1997. In the years since, the following golfers have moved up to the PGA Tour after recording a third win in the same Web.com Tour season:
  • Carlos Ortiz, 2014
  • Michael Sim, 2009
  • Nick Flanagan, 2007
  • Jason Gore, 2005
  • Tom Carter, 2003
  • Patrick Moore, 2002
  • Heath Slocum, 2001
  • Chad Campbell, 2001
  • Pat Bates, 2001
  • Chris Smith, 1997
