How Mobile Cranes Changed the World

Before the idea of cranes trucks ever existed, cranes were basically fixed to a position. Some were built on railroad tracks, which aided in the idea of having cranes that could move and be transported on trucks to and from various sites without any setup or breakdown required. It was not until 1922 when Henry Coles, a manager at Appleby Corporation started constructing crane trucks, referred to at the time as "the Petrol Electric Lorry Crane." Following the production of crane trucks was the invention of telescopic jibs, which gave cranes greater reach, making them much more useful and cost efficient when constructing skyscrapers. Before telescopic jibs, crane trucks would carry additional booms with them to increase reach, which also increased costs.

Crane trucks, or hydraulic powered cranes, are designed these days to simply transport to a construction site and operate with various types of cargos and loads. What operators love most about the improvements made to crane trucks is that they require little setup or breakdown once the job is complete. A crane truck's most vital part is its boom, from which a hook is suspended by wires and sheaves. A sheave is a wheel with a groove on its edge that holds a belt or cable; one or more sheaves create a pulley. Operators use numerous transmissions to control the wire ropes of the crane truck. In addition, technological advancements in this modern day have made crane truck operations incredibly easier, more valuable and more efficient than in the past.

Truck cranes can carry a wide array of loads. Their capacity ranges from about thirteen tons to twelve hundred tons. These days, crane trucks are most likely single engine trucks, meaning the engine is used to power both the crane and its undercarriage. With the production of crane trucks there is no need for additional equipment on job sites. Before crane trucks equipment was needed to transport cranes from location to location, but because crane trucks can travel on highways, they have eliminated that nuisance. Not only do crane truck operators have to learn about the safety regulations of operating and controlling a crane truck, they must also be skilled at driving one.
