Two different phases of events take place at elite figure skating competitions like the 2015 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships:

• Phase One: Short Program (Singles and Pairs) or Short Dance (Junior and Senior Ice Dancing or Pattern Dances (Novice, Intermediate, and Juvenile Ice Dancing)
• Phase Two: Free Skate (Singles and Pairs) or Free Dance (Ice Dancing)
