Cowboys Round Up Trainrobbers In Border Baseball Sweep
The Alpine Cowboys took the second game of the Border Baseball Classic Tuesday night by defeating the Las Vegas Train Robbers 11-5.
This game started out much as the game on Monday. The Cowboys jumped out to a 6-0 lead and coasted to an 11-5 victory. Pat Lemmo picked up the win, going seven innings and scattering 9 hits. The Train Robbers scored five runs but only four of those were earned. Alpine committed three errors on the night. Lemmo did strike out six but he issued seven walks. If the Cowboys expect good things this year their pitchers must control the walks. Of course if you can continue to score 13 1/2 runs a game walks might not mean as much. The Train Robber starter, Corey Dalghan, threw four wild pitches and the Cowboys scored four times off of those errant throws.
But now to the good stuff. Alpine scored two runs in the bottom of the first on consecutive singles by Casanova Donaldson, Austin Prott and a run scoring single by Brian Millimen that plated Donaldson. Prott would later score on a wild pitch.
In the second, the Cowboys scored two more runs without recording a hit. Riley Smith and Corey Caswell were both hit by pitches to start the inning. Smith scored on a sacrifice by Pat Lemmo and Caswell scored on a grounder to short by John Hotta. Alpine loaded the bases again but Fernando Frias struck out to end the inning leaving three men on base.
The Cowboys blew the game open in the sixth, scoring six runs. Matt Henrickson led off with a base on balls. Riley Smith singled. Corey Caswell doubled to drive in Henrickson and Smith. Pat Lemmo singled with Caswell stopping at third. A wild pitch scored Caswell and Lemmo took second. John Hotta singled and moved Lemmo to third. Hotta took second on the throw to the plate. Another wild pitch scored Lemmo as Hotta moved to third. A third wild pitch got Hotta across as Casanova Donaldson walked. Austin Prott struck out, Brian Millimen sacrificed Donaldson to second and Fernando Frias grounded out to short to end the explosive inning.
The two teams traded runs in the fifth and sixth and the Cowboys entered the seventh with a comfortable 11-1 lead.
Things went south for the Cowboys in the seventh as Pat Lemmo was tagged for four runs before being replaced by Travis Renwick with no outs in the eighth. Carlos Hughes reached first and came around to score on Gary Owen's two run home run, his first of the year. Kyal Williams and Shane Casey also scored in the inning. After Alpine got out of the seventh the Train Robbers would not threaten again.
With the victory the Cowboys move to 2-0 in the league and Las Vegas falls to 0-2. The two teams now travel to Alpine to continue their six game set with four games starting on Thursday the 15th of May at 7 PM at Kokernot Field.
It's early in the season and the Cowboys will likely not go 70-0 but, as with other teams, the pitching must catch up with the hitters. By the time this series is done the Cowboy pitchers will know the strengths and weaknesses of the Train Robber hitters and vice versa. This could help in any playoff situation. These two teams meet again July 2nd through 4th for five games including two double headers. Come out then and watch the fireworks.
