Planting a Raised Garden Bed

    • 1). Fill the raised garden bed with rich topsoil. Add a fertilizer designed for whatever type of garden you are planting. Fertilizer that is effective for flowers might not be right for vegetables. Check with your local gardening center if you are not sure.

    • 2). Cut two or three pieces of string that are 5 inches longer than the length of the frame of the raised bed. Decide how many rows of plants you will have lengthwise in the raised garden. To make sure the rows will be even, use string to mark where the plants will go or where the seeds will be planted. With the help of another person, pull a piece of string lengthwise across the frame where one of the rows will be. Staple or use thumb tacks to hold the ends of the string to the short ends of the frame.

    • 3). Plant the plants or seeds into the raised garden frame. Plant the rows from north to south to take advantage of the sunshine. Be sure to plant the taller plants to the north end of the frame so the smaller frames will not be in the shade during the late aftenoon.

    • 4). Water the raised garden well until the soil is moist. Do not overwater if you planted seeds so as not to wash them out. Keep your garden watered daily. Do not let the soil become dry.
