Strengthen Your Marriage by Spending Devotion Time With Your Spouse
When a man and woman are married, they take a vow in front of God to love, comfort, honor and keep each other for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and health, remaining faithful to each other, for as long as they both live.
Marriage is truly the hardest job that I have ever had. Throw some kids into the mix, and then you have ten times the stress in your marriage. My wife and I both agree that marriage and parenting are the hardest jobs we will ever have in this life, but yet, they are also the most important and rewarding as well. In order to "weather the storms" of marriage and parenting, a husband and wife need to be on the same page pertaining to many issues, but they also need to have a close, personal relationship with God. This can only be done through spending devotion time together.
Devotion time is something that a husband and wife should spend doing with each other every day. Studying the bible together, then praying with each other will strengthen a marriage; it has done this for mine. Also, studying God's word together will help a husband and wife with their parenting and also to manage finances in ways that strengthen the family, and glorify God. Children will also benefit from seeing their parents spending time together with God. I believe when a child sees mom and dad having devotions, it gives him/her a sense of security, and it is something they will remember always. It is something that will prepare a child's heart to hear the Gospel, and hopefully make a decision to follow Christ. A child's parents are usually the first exposure they will have with the Gospel, why not live it out daily for them in your own lives?
Only good things will come from devotion time together as husband and wife. This is a powerful thing to do, it glorifies God, and He will bless you for it! "The Love Languages Devotional Bible" by Dr. Gary Chapman is a great tool to use as a guide for your devotion time. Below are some ways you can use to spend devotion time together.
1.Both of you wake up early before work and before the kids are up.
2.Have devotions in the evenings. Do this either after the kids are in bed, or while they are distracted with other projects.
3.If you are short on time, then each of you could pick a short bible verse, and memorize it. Each of you could share the verse together and apply it to your lives today.
4.If you work odd hours, you could schedule time to call your spouse before bed, and at least pray together, or read the €bible verse of the day€ on one of the smart phone apps, then pray.
5.If you are intimidated and do not know where to start. Lots of the bible apps, such as YouVersion, have many devotional tools to choose from.
These are just some simple, quick ideas. I hope they help you.
