Ribbon Storage Ideas

Crafters, sewing artists and avid gift wrappers often have many rolls of ribbon in their supply closet. Ribbon rolls can be bulky, taking up much-needed space in a drawer or a cabinet. Storing ribbon rolls in a box or drawer does not allow easy visibility. The best ribbon storage allows easy access to the ribbons, as well as wide visibility so you can see all of the different ribbon designs at a glance. - Make horizontal ribbon storage using a curtain rod across back of a closet, on a wall, between two cabinets or hanging from the ceiling. Brace the curtain rod on metal brackets that are at least 8 inches away from the wall so that the ribbon rolls will turn. A tension rod between two cabinets or in a doorway will also store the ribbons while providing easy access. Suspend a curtain rod from the ceiling by making a loop hanger with 22-gauge craft wire. Cut two lengths of wire twice as long as the desired length of the hanger. Make a loop in the center and wind the ends of each wire around a small cup hook attached to the ceiling. Space the cup hooks to match the width of the curtain rod. Rest the ends of the curtain rod in the loops of the wire.
Thread the ribbon rolls side by side over the curtain rod with the ribbon ends facing downward. This will allow you to remove the ribbon smoothly from the individual rolls as needed. - Vertical ribbon storage is simple to create with a 1/2-inch diameter dowel rod anchored to the floor with a metal bracket. Spray paint the dowel rod any color before you install it in the room. Place the rod in the corner of your craft room or inside a closet. Leave the top of the dowel open so that you can slide the ribbons on and off as needed.
- Combine vertical and horizontal ribbon storage by stacking horizontal dowel rods in a vertical row. Make the side braces for the rods with two 2 x 4-inch wood boards. Cut 1/2-inch dowels in equal lengths to fit the desired width of the ribbon storage. One dowel rod will be one row of the ribbon storage unit. Cut the wood boards equal to the desired height of the ribbon storage unit. Make a base for each board with a 2 x 6-inch wood board. Center the 2 x 4-inch board on the 6-inch side of the base board, perpendicular to the base.
Attach one end of the dowels to the 4-inch side of one board with wood screws. Space the dowels 8 to 10 inches apart so large ribbon rolls will fit easily. Drill 1-inch indentations in the remaining board, also on the 4-inch-wide side. The indentations should correspond to the ends of the rods. The rods will fit inside the indentations so you can remove them as needed to replace the ribbon rolls.
