Tips on Removing Lino Adhesive From Wood

104 29

    Heat

    • Linoleum adhesive is heat sensitive and will begin to melt when heat is applied. A heat gun, boiling water or even a hairdryer on a high setting will provide enough heat to begin to melt the adhesive, making is far easier to scrape up with a knife. Be careful when using hot water however, as it must be cleaned off immediately to avoid the risk of warping the wood.

    Scraping

    • Lino adhesive is easily cut, making it possible to scrape it up with a sharp knife, spatula or paint scraper. When removing lino adhesive from wood using a scraper, it is important to scrape along the wood grain as this will help to disguise any accidental scratches made on the wood.

    Solvent

    • Lino adhesive can be dissolved using specialist solvents or adhesive removers. These should be sprayed onto the adhesive and allowed to soak in, at which point they will break down the bonds in the adhesive, making it easy to wipe up. Any leftovers can then be either spayed and wiped again, or scraped off with a knife.

    Sanding

    • If the state of the floor is not an issue, such as situations where the floor is going to be sanded down and re-varnished or painted, simply sand the adhesive away. Lino adhesive can be sanded using a low-grit sandpaper, which is less prone to marking the wood than a coarse sandpaper.
