How to Get a Plastic Smell Out of a Down Coat
- 1). Place the coat in a frontloading washing machine.
- 2). Choose the gentle cycle and cold or warm water for the wash.
- 3). Wash with a specially formulated delicates detergent, following label directions.
- 4). Dry the coat on low heat in the dryer for several hours. Place two clean tennis balls in the dryer with the coat, to ensure proper drying occurs and that the down's "loft" is restored.
- 5). Place the coat on a straight chair back with a clean bath towel underneath to protect against soiling. Continue air drying for several days, to completely remove any traces of moisture.
- 1). Place an otherwise clean coat in a large, clean plastic bag, such as a garbage bag.
- 2). Place two previously unused odor control shoe inserts in a clean pillow case.
- 3). Place the pillow case with shoe inserts on top of the down coat in the plastic bag.
- 4). Fold the coat around the shoe inserts so that the shoe inserts are at the center of the coat bundle.
- 5). Tightly close the plastic bag with coat and shoe inserts inside.
- 6). Leave the coat to sit undisturbed in the bag for one week.
- 7). Remove the coat from the bag and hang to air out.
- 8). To restore the down's loft, place the coat in a cool, unheated dryer with two tennis balls and tumble for 10 to 15 minutes.
