    • 1). Cover the area surrounding your workspace with newspaper. Tape any areas that you do not want to treat with the painter's tape. Lay down the plastic sheet to protect the floor of the work area.

    • 2). Sand the area that you want to treat, removing paint and soft wood until you have revealed reasonably strong wood. Use the water and rag to remove any dirt, grease, oil or loose particles from the wood. Allow the wood to dry before proceeding.

    • 3). Shake the wood hardener vigorously for several minutes. Paint the wood hardener into the compromised wood with a disposable paint brush. Apply several coats to the wood until the surface appears shiny. Dispose of brushes used to apply the wood hardener and allow the hardener to dry for 2-4 hours.

    • 4). Apply wood filler to the treated area after the wood hardener has dried. Sand the area of the wood that you want to treat and paint.

    • 5). Mark areas that you want to avoid painting with painter's tape and newspaper, then apply the primer in long brush strokes moving in the direction of the wood grain using the artist's brush.

    • 6). Sand the primed area lightly to create a rough surface to which the paint can adhere. Apply the paint in long strokes with the direction of the wood grain. Apply 2-3 coats of paint to provide full paint coverage and to protect the wood from further rot.
